The University Clermont-Auvergne opens a 3 years fully-funded PhD project
on â??Tsunamis generated by eruptive column collapse: an experimental
approachâ?? at the Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans, France.

Summary : Explosive volcanic eruptions generate ascending columns of
pyroclastic material that collapse if they become denser than the
atmosphere. In the case of an underwater eruption at shallow depth or on a
small island, column collapse becomes a potential cause of tsunami. This
tsunamigenic mechanism could have been involved in eruptions such as
Krakatau in 1883 (Indonesia) and Hunga Tonga â?? Hunga Ha'apai in 2022
(Tonga). The objective of the thesis is to carry out experiments in a
tsunami channel in order to understand the physical mechanisms that govern
the generation of tsunami through collapse of an eruptive column and the
vertical entry of pyroclastic material into the water. The collapse of the
eruptive column is simulated by the free fall of a granular material
released from a reservoir located in the middle of the channel and at
various heights. The experiments are filmed by two high-speed video
cameras, one centered on the impact zone, the other placed downstream to
record the propagation of the wave in the channel. The results of the
laboratory experiments will also provide benchmarking for numerical models
of complex sources of tsunamis such as eruptive column collapses, and to
integrate such scenarios in tsunami warning systems.
