Call for applications: Postdoctoral position at Ckelar Volcanoes (2023_1)

The Millennium Institute for Volcanic Risk Research - Ckelar Volcanoes,
offers a postdoctoral position in volcanic hazards and risks.

General Background

One of the major problems in the analysis of volcanic hazards is the poor
detailed geological information available to establish the characteristics,
time of occurrence, magnitude, and distances reached by the effusive and
explosive events. The modeling of the volcanological processes is one of
the most important tasks to be carried out in order to establish their
eruptive scenarios, and consequently, the areas where possible future
events can be affected.

Finally, the analysis of multidimensional vulnerability is essential to
establish the elements that may eventually be explored in regions that
could be affected by a volcanic eruption. In particular, northern Chile is
a perfect scenario that can be considered as a natural laboratory for the
evaluation of volcanic hazards and risks, mainly due to the good
preservation of the geological record, less populated and with scarce
infrastructure, which allows to obtain a high level of detail.

Research

The main research topic is to carry out volcanic hazard assessment,
physical, territorial, social and economic vulnerability analysis in
volcanic areas related to polygenetic and monogenetic systems in northern
Chile.

Requirements

· Doctoral degree certification in Earth Sciences or related fields.

· Curriculum vitae.

· A cover letter that must indicate a tentative working plan and previous
experience in volcanic hazard assessment and vulnerability analysis (this
point can be supported with copies of scientific articles).

· Two recommendation letters.

Responsibilities

· Permanent residence in Chile, specifically in the city of Antofagasta.

· Teamwork and collaboration with master and doctoral students.

· Participation in outreach activities.

· If necessary, participate in teaching activities.

· Apply to the FONDECYT postdoctoral competition in case of having obtained
the doctoral degree no later than January 1, 2020.

· Publication of at least 1 scientific WOS/ISI article per year.

Time and remuneration

· Duration of the position: Two years, extensible to 3 years on the basis
of an evaluation during the second year.

· Starting of the postdoc: April 2023.

· Monthly income: CLP$1,970,000 (US$2,300 approximately).
