Notwithstanding the main focus of the field trip is the volcano geology and eruptive products of mafic and silicic monogenetic volcanoes, such as maars, pyroclastic cones and lava domes, we will discover their spatio-temporal and volumetric distribution in the context of caldera-forming eruptions. The program includes 1 full day of boat cruise on scenic Lake Taupo (occupies the Taupo caldera) provides a cross-sectional view of geologic record of the products of two supervolcanic eruptions (~350 ka Whakamaru and ~25 ka Oruanui), lava domes, flows and a tuff cone intersected by faults and collapse scars of the Taupo caldera. When the weather is fine, there is a picturesque view to the snow-capped Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe located south from the lake. The field trip will provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in MÄ?ori culture (e.g. MÄ?ori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay) and thermal pools or natural hot water streams of the numerous geothermal fields of the region.
