Dear Colleagues,

The Piton de la Fournaise Volcano Observatory of the Institut de Physique
du Globe de Paris invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the
framework of the ERC PRESEISMIC project. The postdoctoral research will
focus on the use of machine learning techniques to improve detection and
localization of earthquakes during seismic swarms.

Seismicity is currently one of the best tools to monitor transient aseismic
processes such as slow slip on active faults or magma migration on
volcanoes. However, given the large number of earthquakes to be identified
and the increase in the number of available stations, automated approaches
are necessary. The successful candidate will test the ability of existing
deep neural network picking techniques to detect and locate earthquakes
during active swarm episodes observed on volcanoes and on active faults. As
a first application case, we intend to analyze pre-eruptive
volcano-tectonic swarms at Piton de la Fournaise volcano to characterize
the spatio-temporal properties of magma migration in the volcanic edifice.
Funding is guaranteed for 18 months starting at the end of 2022 or early
2023.

A recent Ph.D. in Geophysics (defended less than two years ago) and
experience with the analysis of seismological data are required. Some
skills in machine learning and in python are also highly desired. A
driver's license is recommended. The candidate will be invited to
participate in the fieldwork at Piton de la Fournaise volcano. He/she will
also be invited to participate to the routine set up at the observatory for
the monitoring of Piton de la Fournaise and Mayotte.

The postdoctoral research will be conducted at the Piton de la Fournaise
Volcano Observatory (OVPF) located on La Réunion Island. The observatory is
in charge of monitoring the Piton de la Fournaise volcano since 1979. Since
2020, the OVPF is also in charge of monitoring the seismo-volcanic activity
of Mayotte. The successful candidate will be integrated within a small but
multidisciplinary active team of researchers working on one of the most
active volcanoes on the planet (with more than 2 eruptions / year since
2014). The Observatory is located on La Réunion island, a hotspot of
cultural diversity with nearly 1 million people.
