We invite you to submit an abstract to the session S08: Towards a
multidisciplinary approach to understand the origin and dynamics of
paroxysms at basaltic volcanoes

Conveners: Ida Di Carlo (Institut des Sciences de la Terre dâ??Orléans -
ISTO), Massimo Pompilio (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia
(INGV) Sezione di Pisa), Michel Pichavant (Institut des Sciences de la
Terre dâ??Orléans - ISTO), Nolwenn Le Gall (Department of Mechanical
Engineering - University College London)

Over time, most of the scientific community's studies of basaltic volcano
activity have focused on the normal Strombolian activity and on shallow
conduit processes. However, an important and missed window to more
realistically understand the activity of the whole plumbing system in a
basaltic volcano is represented by the paroxysmal activity. The paroxysm
represents a particularly energetic and dangerous "unexpected" event, with
a probable deep origin, that interrupts the normal eruptive activity. The
recent events which occurred at Stromboli (summer 2019) and Etna (2021 and
2022) have once again focused attention on the importance of understanding
the mechanisms of triggering and development of these particular eruptive
phenomena. To this aim the development of a phenomenological model for the
onset of paroxysm requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this session we
expect contributions from volcanology, geophysics and petrology, combining
theoretical, empirical and experimental methods aimed at understanding the
origin and dynamics of paroxysmal eruption.

Best regards

Ida Di Carlo, Massimo Pompilio, Michel Michavant and Nolwenn Le Gall
