Increasing knowledge about danger, exposure, and vulnerability is the first important step in defining possible risk scenarios on which to base the analysis and management of the risk itself. This session aims to highlight the latest cognitive tools on risk scenarios and alert levels aimed at a better definition of volcanic risk in inhabited areas. The fundamental link between the proposed session and volcanic risk management is the close social relationship with the inputs that the scientific community transfers to governance, which will be more effective if the needs of decision-makers are well-identified in advance.
