The details are below, and please disseminate this announcement to any interested person and feel free to contact the Conveners for any further information. *Location: * Hotel Castello (TBC), Heraklion, Crete, Greece *Date:* Sunday 12th June, 10am â?? 5pm *Convenors:* IAVCEI WOVO Volcano Alert Level System Working Group Carina Fearnley (c.fearnley@xxxxxxxxx), Annie Winson Amy Donovan, and Sally Potter. Researchers in this topic are also welcome. *Overview: *This workshop aims to explore the links between volcano observatory scientists, key stakeholders (government and others), and the public via volcano alert level systems (VALS). VALS sit at the interface between the practice, policies, and communication to all stakeholders. It is imperative therefore that risk mitigation practices are shared and discussed between different stakeholders so that these systems are effective. Previous workshops have been attended by a wide diversity of stakeholders and researchers, and consequently have focused on the connections between science and society and discussing good practice. *Session description:* We build on prior workshops to review recent publications on VALS, and share knowledge, experience, and best practices so that all practitioners can benefit, particularly those who are devising new or alternative systems, or managing the standardisation of systems. We aim to explore specific issues of concern raised during our CoV10 discussions: 1. The role of VALS in volcanic crises 2. The challenges of standardisation on VALS effectiveness: managing UN and other regional / global policies with local needs. 3. Creating networks for VALS information and support: balancing virtual and real worlds, and the role of WOVO. 4. Developing a checklist for VALS development: managing problems and issues to consider. *Proposed outputs:* A series of handbooks and guidance for volcano observatories and users by the working group based on a survey, research, and workshop findings. The session will be interactive and interdisciplinary, and we welcome plenty of discussion. *AGENDA* 10:00 - 10:30 Welcome and Overview â??
