The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University located
in Palisades, New York, is seeking a *Staff Associate III/Scientific
Software Developer* to support the VICTOR project which aims to transform
how volcanologists use models to study volcanic eruptions through
modernizing the computational infrastructure and tools available to the
community.

In this role, the Staff Associate III/Scientific Software Developer will
use their knowledge of software development, scientific computing, and
their analytical skills to help solve complex problems and analyze possible
solutions aimed at improved modeling. Will design, support, and advance a
new web-based gateway for the volcanology community to access
High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources such as cloud platforms (AWS,
Google Cloud) and supercomputing networks (NSF/XSEDE).  Will design,
develop, implement, test, maintain, and support the gateway and associated
resources for use by members of the community at large, including faculty,
students, and US and international volcano observatory staff. The candidate
will serve as the main contact point between the project team and a
subcontracted hub engineering team.

*Required Experience and Qualifications:*

 * Bachelorâ??s degree in the field of computer science, physical
   sciences, or engineering, or a related field required plus 4 - 6
   years of related experience in software development. Advanced degree
   a plus.
 * Strong communication skills, team work, and analytical and
   problem-solving skills required.
 * Prior experience with high-performance computing, open-source, and
   research computing gateways such as JupyterHub, OpenOnDemand,
   HubZero, or similar.
 * Experience in web development and common programming languages such
   as Python, R, Java, HTML, Flask, Ruby or similar.
 * Familiarity with common scientific computing programs or
   environments such as MATLAB, Mathematica, STATA, RStudio, Jupyter
   Notebooks, or similar tools. Experience with scripting basics (e.g.,
   Shell, Batch, Perl, Python) and Linux server configuration and
   troubleshooting required.
 * Must be willing and able to learn technologies and required domain
   knowledge at a rapid pace and work effectively in a dynamic,
   collaborative environment with colleagues across job functions and
   departments.

The position will be located at LDEO in Palisades, New York, and the
selectee will need to live within commuting distance of campus. Work will
also require travel (less than 10% of time) to Tampa and Boston for
collaboration and training workshops with project partners at Tufts and the
University of South Florida.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal
each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding. Columbia University
benefits are offered with this Officer of Research appointment.
