4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4 From: "Társilo Girona" <tarsilo.girona@xxxxxxxxxx> *RECRUITING TWO POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS!* Two fully-funded 2-year postdoctoral positions in the field of volcano modeling and eruption forecasting are available at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) - Geophysical Institute (GI). The Postdoctoral Researchers will work on developing innovative physics-based models and statistics-based eruption forecasting models for Alaska volcanoes, within the framework of the â??NSF-PREEVENTS Eruption Forecasting Project: Development and testing of volcanic eruptions models and forecasts through multidisciplinary data synthesis at Alaska volcanoesâ??. This project capitalizes on the wealth of data from the Alaska Volcano Observatory; the multidisciplinary expertise of volcano observatory scientists; and the analytical power provided by a team of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, UAF faculty, and other national and international collaborators. Research and data analysis are currently being conducted on four interrelated disciplines: (1) geodesy, (2) seismology & infrasound, (3) volcanic gas geochemistry & remote sensing, and (4) petrology, geochemistry & physical volcanology, and focuses on eight recently active Alaska volcanoes: Cleveland, Okmok, Bogoslof, Shishaldin, Pavlof, Veniaminof, Augustine, and Redoubt. One of the postdoctoral research positions is offered for a physics-based modeler, who is expected to develop a new model to understand pre-eruptive and syn-eruptive processes at one of the target volcanoes. This Researcher will be mentored jointly by Társilo Girona (UAF-GI) and Kyle Anderson (USGS). This position will be based at UAF and the researcher will have the opportunity to travel annually to work in-person with Dr. Anderson at the California Volcano Observatory. The second postdoctoral research position is offered for a statistics-based modeler, who is expected to develop new models to investigate the emergence of pre-eruptive and syn-eruptive patterns, with the final goal of generating probabilistic eruption forecasts through traditional and novel probabilistic techniques (e.g., event trees, artificial intelligence). This Researcher will be mentored jointly by Taryn Lopez (UAF-GI) and Warner Marzocchi (University of Naples, Federico II, Italy). This position will be based primarily at UAF and the researcher will have the opportunity to travel annually to work in-person with Dr. Marzocchi at the University of Naples, Federico II.
