The USGS Volcano Hazards Program is advertising a Mendenhall Postdoctoral
Opportunity: â??Applying modern computational techniques to the detection,
identification, and location of volcanic seismicityâ??.

20-15. Applying modern computational techniques to the detection,
identification, and location of volcanic seismicity (usgs.gov)

Seismology is a fundamental tool used for monitoring volcanic unrest, as
volcanic processes involving magmatic and hydrothermal fluids and their
interaction with the solid Earth generate a broad range of seismic waves.
The location of these sources of volcanic seismicity, the quantification of
their source mechanisms, and the interpretation of the complex and
nonlinear characteristics of this behavior forms the basis of modern
volcano seismology.

We invite proposals that address any type of volcanic seismicity, the
development and improvement of algorithms to efficiently detect this
seismicity in real time, identify the best approaches to classify, locate,
and determine source mechanisms for this seismicity, and to implement the
developed tools at the USGS volcano observatories.

Applicants must meet the qualifications for one of the following: Research
Computer Scientist, Research Geophysicist, Research Mathematician.

Applications close 1/6/2022

Please contact Phil Dawson (dawson@xxxxxxxx) with any questions regarding
this opportunity. We encourage your sharing this announcement with your
interdisciplinary colleagues and students.
