Description
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of  Columbia University in
Palisades, New York, is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to
conduct original research on sulfur in magmas, from the mantle to the
climate system. Approaches may include laboratory experiments to
determine the sulfur solubility in silicate melts; analysis of sulfur
concentration, species and isotopes in volcanic crystals and glasses;
and developing numerical models for sulfur degassing from ascending magmas.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required by the date of hire. Preferred qualifications
include several years of postdoctoral experience; proficiency in
experimental petrology; analytical expertise in electron, laser and
synchrotron microbeam techniques; thermodynamic modeling; successful
grant-writing experience, and a substantial publication record in
relevant topics.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for
renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears
and will continue until the position is filled. The position has a
desired start date of November 1, 2021 with some flexibility.
