We are happy to announce a special session on tephra studies in honour of
Don Mullineaux at this yearâ??s AGU. This is a general call for abstracts to
a session that aims to embrace all multidisciplinary research that falls
under the broad umbrella of tephra research - a reflection of Donâ??s
considerable contributions. The details are:

AGU Fall Meeting
New Orleans
13-17 December 2021
Abstract open now, deadline August 4th

Session Title:
V022. Tephra, volcanic processes, and hazards: A session in honor of Don
Mullineaux

Session Description:
This session honors the life and work of USGS scientist Donal R. Mullineaux
(1925â??2021), a pioneer in tephra and volcanic hazards research. Don was a
Quaternary geologist who while mapping in the Puget Sound lowlands
discovered ash beds that led him to Mount St. Helens. His work with Dwight
Crandell helped unravel the eruptive history and hazards of Mount St.
Helens and other Cascades volcanoes and pioneered the addition of volcanic
hazard assessments to USGS hazard products. Don further served as
coordinator and spokesman for Geological Survey field operations during the
1980 Mount St. Helens eruption where he is credited with saving lives. Here
we welcome submissions covering the broad themes of Donâ??s work on tephraâ??in
both volcanology and Quaternary geologyâ??encompassing tephrochronology,
eruptive histories, physical volcanology, volcanic hazards and forecasting.
We particularly encourage novel and interdisciplinary research that
reflects the rapid growth of the field over the last 20 years.

Specifically we welcome field studies, analog lab experiments, remote
sensing, and microanalytical studies that address:
â?¢ tephrostratigraphy and -chronology
â?¢ cryptotephra identification and implications
â?¢ eruption source parameters and classification
â?¢ insights into plume dynamics and ash dispersal
â?¢ case studies of recent explosive eruptions from interdisciplinary
perspectives
â?¢ volcano-specific and regional eruptive histories
â?¢ eruption style and emplacement mechanisms (fall, flow, coignimbrite)
â?¢ processes that influence the injection and deposition of volcanic ash and
gas (e.g., magma-water interaction, vent geometry, ash aggregation,
gravitational instabilities, turbulence)
â?¢ characteristics of volcanic ash (grain size, morphology, internal
textures)
â?¢ fragmentation of fine ash
â?¢ distinguishing magmatic, phreatomagmatic, and phreatic eruptions

We look forward to â??seeing" you there (the meeting will be hybrid with both
virtual and live components)

This session is supported by the following IAVCEI commissions: Tephra
Hazard Modelling, Volcanic Hazards and Risk, Tephrochronology
