Dear Colleagues,
  *Visages of Geoheritage
(https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/session/40291
<https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/session/40291>)* will
be a virtual PICO session at the vEGU21 Gather Online (replacing the
EGU General Assembly) on 19-30 April 2021. It will run alongside a
sister session '*Visages of Geodiversity*'
The session will be globally accessible, due to the online format, and
we invite you all from around the world to contribute to this major
opportunity to share and discuss. Contributions from geoheritage
researchers, practitioners, and all forms of geoheritage protected
areas are welcome (e.g. UNESCO Global Geoparks, UNESCO World Heritage
sites, national parks and other protected areas).
Please note that there is an abstract fee (40â?¬), and a Registration
fee â?? Many young researchers and those from lower to middle income
countries do not pay registration, see the rules
(https://egu21.eu/register.html). The UNESCO International Geosciences
Programme Project 692 'Geoheritage for Resilience', will support a
number of abstract fee payments, and any necessary associated
registrations (See www.geopoderes.com - 'EGU').
Around the EGU week we'll be organising some breakout discussion
sessions around the various themes of geoheritage, geohazards ad
resilience and we will be inviting you to join in this.
All the best,
*Paola Corata, Paula Naomi Irapta, Lucie Kubalíková, Márton Pál,
Benjamin van Wyk de Vries*

Abstract deadline: 13 January 2021.
DETAILSSession title: â??Visages of Geoheritage".
*Geoheritage is the human side of geosciences, where natural features
are valued in relation to their societal, cultural and economic
context. Geoheritage provides a way to appreciate and manage our
environment, as well as being a window into geosciences for the
broader public. Our fundamental geoscience is incomplete and
meaningless unless it is contextualised, and geoheritage is an
essential way to do this. Geoheritage is multidisciplinary, drawing
from all sides of geosciences and extending them into social sciences,
territorial and risk management, and economics. Geoheritage's basic
building block is the geosite, a geographically defined distinct
feature, and also includes collections, and buildings with natural
stone. All geoheritage is underpinned by geodiversity, the fundamental
study of topographic, lithological and geomorphological variability
(covered in a linked EGU session, Visages of Geodiversity).
This session calls for a continuation of the rich multidisciplinary
sessions in previous EGU meetings, where diverse actors in geoheritage
have exchanged with the whole geosciences community on subjects
ranging from: 1) the integration of geoscience research into
geoheritage (how can you make your research have an impact?; 2) using
geoheritage for responsible resource management; 3) geosite
description, assessment and protection, including legislative aspects
at all scales; 4) territorial management and urban geoheritage; 5)
geoheritage and resilience to natural hazards; 6) geoheritage and
degradation risk assessment; 7) case studies in geoheritage, including
geotourism; 8) remote and geophysical geosciences as intangible
geoheritage.
The session is planned to be be held with on-line presentations, with
a physical poster session, and an open multidisciplinary splinter
meeting, to meet and discuss. Geodiversity and geoheritage visages
will combine in this to engage with a large public.*

NB: Due to the corona pandemic, the EGU General Assembly will be held
online (vEGU21 Gather Online), and all sessions are provisionally
planned to be in PICO format. This means there will be a 2 minute
introduction per presentation at the start of the session (the famous
â??2 minute madnessâ??), followed by individual break-out sessions for
more detailed discussion.
Important Deadlines and Milestones:
- Deadline for abstract submission: January 13th, 2020-
Early-registration/letters of invitation/childcare requests: March
31st, 2020
