PhD Position in Lava Rheology at NCSU

A fully funded Ph.D. position is available in the Marine, Earth, and
Atmospheric Sciences Department at North Carolina State University under
the supervision of Dr. Arianna Soldati, with an expected start date of
August 2021.

The research project is broadly intended to investigate the
high-temperature rheology of Icelandic lavas, with several options (e.g.
focus areas) to collaboratively choose from. This is mainly an experimental
(lab-based) project, but there will be a field work component as well.

The successful candidate shall hold a M.Sc. or equivalent degree by the
start date.

They will have a strong background in geochemistry, igneous petrology, and
volcanology, as demonstrated by relevant coursework and/or work experience.

Previous lab-based research experience is required. Field work experience
is not required, but will be advantageous.

Essential soft skills include critical thinking and problem-solving,
resourcefulness, organizational skills, and reliability.

English proficiency is necessary, and so are demonstrable strong verbal and
written communication skills.

Candidates from underrepresented groups and candidates who have followed a
non-traditional education path are strongly encouraged to apply for this
position.

Prospective applicants should contact Dr. Arianna Soldati (
a.soldati@xxxxxxxx), providing a CV and a motivation letter.

Acceptance is conditional upon Graduate School (
https://grad.ncsu.edu/admissions/) and Department (
https://meas.sciences.ncsu.edu/graduate/apply-to-meas/) admission.
