*PhD Position in Volcanology/Petrology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa*

*â??Depth and longevity of magma reservoirs under the Kilauea 2018 eruption
regionâ??*

A NSF-supported PhD position is soon available at the department of Earth
Sciences (UH Manoa) for an outstanding student to work on a research
project focusing on magmas erupted at various periods (~1790-2018) under
the Lower East Rift Zone, the region that saw the major 2018 eruption at
Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii). The project combines a petrological investigation
of melt inclusions (major, trace element and volatile data) with thermal
modeling to understand how older and more recent magma pockets stored under
rift zones are connected through time and space, and where they are stored
at depth. The research includes petrological and geochemical modeling,
experimental rehomogenization of melt inclusions (heating stage, 1-atm
furnace), analytical work (EPMA, FTIR, Raman, SIMS) and some field work and
sample collection. The results from each of the research tasks will be
placed within the context of the exceptional geophysical record available
for several of these eruptions.

*Qualifications*: The candidate should *preferably* *have a Masterâ??s
degree* and
research experience in igneous petrology and/or volcanology. An excellent
work ethic, a good capacity to work independently, and motivation are all a
must! Good physics and math skills, as well as experience with scientific
programming, are preferred.

*Responsibilities and opportunities*: The student will be expected to
fulfill their research duties within the vibrant ES dept (
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/) at the University of Hawaii, part of the
School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology - SOEST) and will be
involved in mentoring undergraduate students. It is possible that the
student will perform semester(s) of Teaching Assistant (TA) duties to
foster professional development. The student will take part in organizing a
three-day volcanology workshop in Hilo. Those enthused by the outdoors will
have opportunities including project field work, and field trips associated
with coursework.

*Advising and Collaborating Personnel*: The candidate will be advised by *Tom
Shea* (UH Manoa) and co-advised by *Paul Wallace* (Univ. of Oregon) and *Cheryl
Gansecki* (UH Hilo). The student will also have a unique opportunity to
collaborate closely with scientists from the United States Geological
Survey (USGS), and from two other institutions (Oregon State University,
Université Clermont Auvergne).

*Project duration*: Funding from the National Science Foundation will be
available for 3 years.

*Expected starting date*: January 2021 (Spring semester)

*Application*: The application material should include: a *cover
letter* detailing
academic upbringing, motivations and existing research experience, *a CV*,
and the *contact information of three referees* (please do not have
referees send recommendations directly, we will contact them). Send the
material directly to tshea@xxxxxxxxxx (preferably as one pdf). The review
process will start on July 1st and continue until a suitable candidate is
found. Inquiries about the position should be sent to the same email
address.
