1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: Jurgen Neuberg <J.Neuberg@xxxxxxxxxxx> *Scientific Advisory Committee on Montserrat Volcanic Activity â??* *Appointment of a new committee member* The Scientific Advisory Committee on Montserrat Volcanic Activity (SAC) is seeking to fill a vacancy on its committee. Applications are invited from experienced scientists in volcanology, especially in the field of igneous petrology and deep magma processes. The SAC is commissioned by the Overseas Territories Directorate (OTD) of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), and works according to the Office of Science and Technology (OST) Code of Practice for Scientific Advisory Committees. The main responsibilities of the SAC are described by the following Terms of Reference (TORs): i. to carry out regular hazard and risk assessments of the volcano in co-operation with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) and to report its findings to FCO (OTD) and the Government of Montserrat; ii. to provide scientific advice at a strategic level to FCO (OTD) and the Government of Montserrat outside these regular assessments in co-operation with the MVO; iii. to provide independent advice on the scientific and technical operations of the MVO to ensure that the work matches the level of risk; iv. to provide scientific advice and assistance to the MVO as required by the MVO Director; v. to offer advice on new developments that were not foreseen when the TORs were set up, and if appropriate make recommendations for changes to the TORs. Members invited to serve on the SAC are expected to attend annual hazard and risk assessment meetings on Montserrat and to participate in the formalised elicitation procedure. Members have the responsibility to use their scientific judgement and expertise to meet the Terms of Reference. The membership will be considered on an annual basis with a view to regular changes and refreshment of membership. The FCO (OTD) will reimburse travel costs, hotel accommodation, meals and standard professional fees in full. Applicants are invited from a wide range of scientists expected to have at least several years of experience in key areas of expertise required to assess the hazards and risks of erupting volcanoes. Expertise in igneous petrology and deep magmatic processes is required. The candidate would also be expected to contribute to the team effort regarding volcano hazard and risk analysis.
