PhD position *on data assimilation of geodetic data to forecast eruptive
vents location and timing*, ISTerre-LISTIC, Chambéry, France.

*The main objective of this thesis is to improve the integration of
geodetic data provided by remote sensing and dynamical mechanical models
for magma transport. *The PhD position is partly funded by the French
National Research Agency (ANR). It is related to two projects: â??Application
of Artificial Intelligence for understanding and prediction of human and
volcanic activity » and "MagmaPropagator: A forecasting tool for location
and time of volcanic eruptions due to off-conduit magma propagationâ??. The
work will be carried out at University Savoie-Mont Blanc at ISTerre, in the
Volcano Team located at Chambéry and supervised jointly by Virginie Pinel
and Yajing Yan.

Responsibilities:

The PhD will focus on the development of an efficient data assimilation
strategy based on the particle filter allowing to use timely available
geodetic deformation data to predict the location and timing of eruptive
vents resulting from magmatic intrusions propagation. This work will build
on our experience in applying sequential data assimilation techniques (i.e.
Ensemble Kalman Filter) to volcanological problems (Bato et al, 2017, Bato
et al., 2018) and in modeling magma propagation. The work will be performed
in collaboration with our partners from the MagmaPropagator project: Dr.
Eleonora Rivalta at GFZ, Germany and Dr. Francesco Maccaferri at INGV
Osservatorio Vesuviano, Italy. Developments will be applied, tested and
validated using observations available at test volcanoes in collaboration
with the local observatories involved.

Qualification:

The Ph.D candidate should have a strong background in mathematics /
statistics and/or geophysics. Knowledge in volcanology or computational
skills are appreciated.

Contact:

The position may start in October 2020. Further information can be obtained
from Dr. Virginie Pinel. Please send your application in English by email
to Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx. The application should comprise a cover
letter with a brief statement of research experience and motivation, a CV
as well as copies of undergraduate and graduate certificates and be
sent to *Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx
<Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx>*. Examination of applications will start in
June and last until the position is filled.
