6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6 From: Marco Pistolesi <marco.pistolesi@xxxxxxxx> International School of Volcanology 2020 - Working on an active volcano: learning tools of modern volcanology Field measurements, instruments, data acquisition and processing Stromboli, June 13 â?? 21 2020 Dear colleagues, after the success of the last year, we announce the second edition of the International School of Volcanology to be held in Stromboli next June 2020. Stromboli is probably the best-known volcano in the world for its spectacular basaltic explosions occurring every 10 minutes. In the last decades, this persistency of explosive activity made Stromboli the target of many international experiments which have driven the way volcanologists are working today on volcanoes, making Stromboli the best laboratory volcano in the world. With the events of summer 2019, Stromboli has become an even greater focus for hazard and risk assessment studies, with a real need for implementation of workable mitigation measures. The school is aimed at introducing the modern spectrum of field measurements and data acquisition necessary to study and monitor the dynamics of an active volcano. Students will be introduced to the state of the art of geophysical and geochemical instrumentations, tephra sampling, data acquisition and processing. Special attention will be given to the use of the monitoring tools to define not only eruptive dynamics but also Alert levels and Early-Warning procedure for Civil Protection use. The school is organized with short lectures in the classroom and field experience. The school is strongly field-based, where lectures and discussion on volcano dynamics and the use of the instruments will be made in a hands-on manner rather than in theory. Multi-parametric experiments will be carried out during the school and used to support learning through implementation. All participants must: â?¢ Be at the masterâ??s, PhD, post-doc or early career scientist (within 5 years of PhD) level â?¢ Have a level of English sufficient to allow participation in discussions within a multicultural and multilingual group (applications must be in English) IMPORTANT DATES Dead line for registration is 28th February 2020. Places announced by 15th March 2020.
