Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session at Goldschmidt
2020.

05g: Volcano-Petrology Applied to the Earth and Other Terrestrial Planets:
Celebrating the Diverse Contributions of Mac Rutherford
< https://goldschmidt.info/2020/program/programViewThemes >

Conveners: Jim Gardner, Mike Krawczynski, Molly McCanta, Michelle Minitti
Keynote: Alberto Saal (Brown University)

To honor the breadth and depth of scientific contributions of Mac
Rutherford - scientist, teacher, advisor, and mentor - across his stellar
career, we invite you to submit an abstract to the special session
"Volcano-Petrology Applied to the Earth and Other Terrestrial Planets:
Celebrating the Diverse Contributions of Mac Rutherfordâ?? at
the Goldschmidt2020 conference. The session description provides a brief
overview of Macâ??s scholarship:

The understanding of volcanic processes on Earth and other terrestrial
planets has advanced tremendously in recent decades, thanks in large part
to the application of experimental petrology to the determination of
magmatic phase equilibria, volatile solubilities, and the kinetics of
mineral-melt reactions, crystallization, and vesiculation. This session
spotlights the pioneering contributions that Malcolm (Mac) Rutherford has
made toward diverse applications of â??volcano petrologyâ??, which include
establishing the petrogenesis of mid-ocean ridge lavas, calc-alkaline
lavas, martian meteorites, lunar basalts, and lunar granites; constraining
the depths, temperatures, oxygen fugacities, and plumbing systems at active
arc volcanoes on Earth; exploring the dynamics of fire fountaining on the
Moon; estimating the rates at which magmas ascend during effusive and
explosive eruptions; and determining the solubility, speciation, and role
in eruption processes of the major volatile species (i.e., H2O, CO2, Cl, S)
dissolved in natural silicate melts. We invite contributions from
generators and users of experimental data related to all aspects of
terrestrial and extraterrestrial petrology and volcanology that have
benefitted from Macâ??s influence over the last half-century.

The Goldschmidt2020 conference is June 21-26, 2020 in Honolulu, Hawaii*;
the abstract deadline is February 14, 2020*. Other meeting details can be
found on the meeting website: https://goldschmidt.info/2020/index. Please
feel free to contact any of us with questions about the session or the
conference.

We look forward to your abstracts!
