Dear Colleagues

We invite you to submit abstracts to our Goldschmidt 2020 session *05h: The
Origin and Evolution of Hawaiian Volcanoes: A Celebration of the Scientific
Contributions of Michael O. Garcia *in Honolulu, HI (21-26 June).

Research on Hawaiian volcanoes â??from source to surfaceâ?? has led to many new
insights into fundamental Earth processes, from the dynamics of mantle
plumes and their compositional heterogeneity to the behavior, and potential
hazards, of active magmatic plumbing systems. This deeper understanding of
the origin and evolution of Hawaiian volcanoes has largely been achieved
using the petrology, geochemistry, and geochronology of their diverse
lavas. In this session, we aim to celebrate everything we have learned
about Hawaiian volcanoes, and in the spirit of Mike Garciaâ??s well-known
collaborative approach to science, plan for the next decade of exciting
discoveries. We invite contributions on Hawaiian volcanism, and other
oceanic island volcanic systems, that encompass the major themes of Mikeâ??s
research, including (but not limited to): the heterogeneity of the mantle,
mantle source and melting processes, mantle plume flux and dynamics, magma
transport and storage, the magmatic transitions between effusive vs.
explosive basaltic volcanism, time-series studies of changes in lava
chemistry, the magmatic and geologic evolution of submarine volcanoes, and
constraints on magmatic processes via mixing, differentiation, and
assimilation. Investigations that use analytical, modeling, and/or
field-based approaches to subaerial and submarine oceanic volcanism in
Hawaiʻi and elsewhere are encouraged.

Anticipated Keynote: Dennis Geist (Univ. of Idaho/NSF)

The deadline for abstract submission is February 14, 2020.

See you in Honolulu!
