2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Severine MOUNE <moune@xxxxxxx> Dear Volcano List, Via a PO-FEDER program, OVSG- IPGP is advertising for a volcano-related post-doc based at OVSG Guadeloupe. Details of the post-doc can be found below: *Post-doctoral position * Intitulé: *Characterisation of the volatility and transportation of trace elements from fumaroles of the magmatic-hydrothermal system of La Soufrière de Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles, FWI.* Workplace: Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de Guadeloupe (OVSG), Le Houelmont, Gourbeyre, Guadeloupe Duration: 18 months, start in April/May 2020 Working environment: The OVSG-IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) has monitoring and research tasks in volcanology on La Soufrière. The observatory team includes 14 people (4 researchers, 5 engineers, 2 technicians, a secretary-manager, a maintenance agent, a guardian). The observatory acquires seismic, geodetic, thermal and meteorological data in real-time from permanent networks, and also acquires regular point data in geophysics (geodesy, temperature) and geochemistry (gas and thermal springs) on many non-instrumented sites. The observatory also hosts the Observatory of Water and Erosion in the West Indies (OBSERA) with a researcher and the participation of two OVSG engineers. Scientific project: Volcanoes represent a significant natural source of metals in the atmosphere by plume emissions. Volcanic plumes contain major gas species and also aerosols that are concentrated in trace elements, such as Cu, As, Se, Cd, Pb, Tl, as a result of strong partitioning into the particulate phase during colling and dilution of the plume. The impact of these elements on the environment and human health is important. Metal emissions are not only a concern for the atmosphere, but for the hydrosphere and biosphere as well since they affected the plants, soil and so potentially the local groundwater. For these reasons, the proposed project is integrated into the project PO-FEDER IMMERGE â??Impact Multi-environment volcanic and Saharan fallout in Guadeloupeâ??. La Soufrière de Guadeloupe is an active hydrothermal system that currently show signs of unrest. Despite scrubbing by various fluids at depth, it has been shown that significant quantities of metals are still emitted into the atmosphere. Hence, the aim of this project is the determination of the trace element compositions in the volcanic aerosols from the plumes generated by the low-T° fumaroles at the dome of La Soufrière. The methodology will be in-situ filter-packs and cascade impactors, as well as airborne drone measurements. Trace chemistry and analysis will be performed at IPGP (Paris), while all the fieldwork, ionic-chromatography analysis, and workplace will be held in Guadeloupe. Required formation: Ph.D. in geochemistry, volcanology. Experience in volcanic gas chemistry, especially in volcanic aerosols will be appreciated. Required qualities: Be independent, rigorous, organized, enjoy working in a team, have an affinity for working in the field in tropical mountain environment + Driving license Equipment: All safety and field equipment will be provided Brut Salary: 3300 euros /month *Applications close on the 1st March 2020.* Please, send a CV and letter of motivation to Séverine Moune (moune@xxxxxxx), and contact us if you need further information. 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
