Postdoctoral Research Scientist for AVERT Project
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory - Palisades, NY

With support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Lamont-Doherty
Earth Observatory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work on
the project AVERT: Anticipating Volcanic Eruptions in Real Time. The
project aims to establish an open-data, real-time, multi-sensor experiment
on Okmok and Cleveland volcanoes in Alaska in order to develop data streams
and forecasts for highly active volcanic systems. Classic â??closedâ?? and
â??openâ?? volcanoes, Okmok and Cleveland will serve as testing grounds for the
use of multi-sensor, satellite-telemetered arrays to understand eruption
run-up, triggering and precursors. A multi-year logistics platform will
engage partners in this community experiment. The candidate will serve as
project manager for the AVERT project, working with a team of Principal
Investigators at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, including Drs. Terry
Plank and Einat Lev. Efforts would include organizing field logistics,
taking part in field deployments, interfacing with the Alaska Volcano
Observatory and other project partners, developing open data tools, and
engaging in outreach to stakeholders and inreach to the science community.
We anticipate that project management duties will be the majority of
effort. The candidate is also encouraged to conduct original research using
the AVERT data as opportunities allow.

A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required by the date of hire. Preferred
qualifications include excellent communication and organizational skills,
field experience on active volcanoes, an interest in machine learning and
published research involving volcano seismology, geodesy, gas chemistry or
other relevant data streams or models.

The position is for three years, with a desired start date on or before
June 2020. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad
appears and will continue until the position is filled. Columbia
University benefits offered with this Officer of Research appointment.
