From: James White <james.white@xxxxxxxxxxx>''

Surtsey is the type example of a volcanic island built by explosive
eruption critically mediated by water, and is a touchstone for analysis of
explosive magma-water interaction in general. Cores extracted in 2015 by
the ICDP project SUSTAIN are available for study.

This project will focus on an inclined core that extends beneath Surtsey's
first and main vent, intersecting its center > 100 m below the pre-eruption
seafloor. The core demonstrates unambiguously that there is a diatreme
beneath the Surtsey tuff cone. We will analyse components in the inclined
core and 3 related vertical cores (one from 1979), plus ash collected
during the eruption and from surface deposits on Surtsey, to understand how
the diatreme structure was excavated, and what was its role in the observed
eruption styles of Surtsey.

Otago's PhD scholarships provide a NZ$27,000 stipend and all tuition fees
for a term of three years. The University of Otago is ranked in the top 1%
of universities in the world, and has the highest-possible rating of 5
Stars Plus in the QS global university performance ratings. Otago Geology
is in the top rank among NZ universities (in the top 100 for Earth and
Marine Science globally), and also the top ranked department in the Science
Division at Otago in NZ's 2019 research-performance exercise. The student
will be joining a vibrant community of graduate students in Dunedin, a
small city between the mountains, the harbour and the sea. Ride the best
waves in the world, take on mighty mountain biking tracks, paddle-board,
kayak or sail on the harbour, or head to Central Otago for a weekend on New
Zealandâ??s top ski fields.

The student will be based in the Otago Department of Geology. Send
inquiries to james.white@xxxxxxxxxxx, who will also be attending AGU in San
Francisco 9-13th December.
