Please contact Tamsin.Mather@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with any questions.

The department seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to
work under the direction of Professor Tamsin Mather (University of
Oxford) to further our understanding of the sulphur cycle through
subduction zones. The role will have a specific focus on making
measurements of sulphur contents and isotopes in primitive melt
inclusions hosted in mineral phases from volcanoes in key subduction
zones. This post is part of the NSF/NERC-funded â??Sulfur Cycling at
Subduction Zonesâ?? project, whose principal aim is to understand the
sulphur inputs into subduction zones and explore the use of isotopic
tracers to further understand the relation of S inputs to that emitted
from arc volcanism. This grant is led by Terry Plank (Lamont Doherty
Earth Observatory, USA) and involves key collaborations with the
University of Palermo, Italy (led by Alessandro Aiuppa) and the
Edinburgh Ion Microprobe Facility in the UK amongst others.

Subduction zones play a key role in mediating global sulphur processing
and the climatic effects of arc volcanism, the economic potential of arc
magmas, and the oxidation state of solid Earth reservoirs. Yet, the
inputs, processing and recycling of S throughout the subduction system
are still poorly constrained. The PDRA will contribute to a significant
improvement in our understanding of the S cycle. They will collaborate
with colleagues studying subduction zone inputs and take a novel
approach to understanding volcanic arc S outputs. This will involve
measuring sulphur concentration and isotopic composition in well-studied
suites of undegassed olivine-hosted melt inclusions from the same
subducting systems targeted by the teams based in the USA and Italy
focusing on S inputs. They will be involved in ion microprobe method
development and will develop models of S isotope behaviour during magma
evolution and degassing. The overall aim is to explore the potential to
trace sulphur isotopes from sediment input to arc output.

The postholder will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences,
University of Oxford, but will spend analytical time at the Edinburgh
Ion Microprobe Facility. They will also be required to travel to the USA
and Italy for sample selection and preparation and collaborator
meetings. This post is full-time and fixed-term for up to 24 months and
we wish to fill it at the earliest opportunity.

Candidates must hold or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in a
relevant field, have experience of preparing and analysing melt
inclusion samples and/or undertaking ion microprobe analyses, together
with an appreciation of volatile processing through subduction zones.
Furthermore, the successful candidate must be able to manage their own
research and administrative activities, lead and report on an
independent research programme and have excellent written and oral
communication skills. There is scope for the PDRA to undertake some
teaching, either in taught courses, field courses, or in the supervision
of Masters projects.

For further details of the post please see the further particulars.
