Iâ??m now advertising for 2 postdocs to work on my ERC Starting Grant,
IMAGINE, based at the University of Cambridge (Geography). The full title
of the project is â??Geographical imaginations and the (geo)politics of

PDRA1 will be an interdisciplinary social scientist, with an interest in
disaster studies and participatory methods. They will: a) Work in
communities initially in Latin American sites to understand cultural,
political and economic issues around volcano communities; b) Aid the
PI/PDRA2 in the development of the project methodology in Latin America; c)
Interview stakeholders (scientists, officials) in Chile, Argentina and Peru
concerning risk management and mitigation; d) Conduct focus groups and
participatory exercises designed by the project team in case study
locations; e) Deploy the methodologies in East Africa in the second phase
of the project; f) Produce high-quality publications; g) Help the PI/PDRA2
in the production of an edited collection; h) Communicate effectively with
partners and stakeholders in case study locations.

PDRA2 will be an interdisciplinary geoscientist, with an interest in risk
assessment and working with communities. They will: a) Work closely with
collaborators in case study regions to develop multihazard scenarios, based
on (i) maps and models, (ii) historical documents and oral accounts and
(iii) workshop and interview information from PDRA1's work. b) Be highly
numerate and have experience using hazard models for volcanic hazards
and/or related hazards; c) Be able to use GIS software in the production
and enhancement of maps; d) Be willing to spend time working through
historical sources to understand past histories of volcanism and community
response to it; e) Be willing to learn some social scientific methodologies
to contribute to scenario construction and use in the later phases of the
project; f) Work in all case study locations.
