1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: James White <james.white@xxxxxxxxxxx> EFFECTS OF DIKE/FISSURE-WALL PROPERTIES ON NEAR-SURFACE MAGMA TRANSPORT AND ERUPTION: AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH USING MOLTEN WAX In 2020 we will build a new device for analogue experiments into how dike/fissure-wall cooling and stability in the shallow subsurface (upper ~0.5 km) affects the initiation and evolution of fissure-to-multi vent eruptions that are common for basaltic eruptions. Though centered on experimental work and physical (primarily thermal) analysis, the project will also involve investigation of dikes and fissure-deposits in the field in NZ and probably internationally, as well as using paleomagnetic techniques (paleothermometry). We seek top-performing students able to earn an Otago PhD scholarship, and interested in combining novel experimental work with field "ground-truthing", quantitative analysis and modelling of experiment results. The project also supports a postdoctoral researcher and involves collaborating researchers in the US and Iceland. Otago's PhD scholarships provide an NZ$27,000 stipend and all tuition fees for a term of three years. The University of Otago is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world, and has the highest-possible rating of 5 Stars Plus in the QS global university performance ratings. Otago Geology is in the top rank among NZ universities (in the top 100 for Earth and Marine Science globally), and also the top-ranked department in the Science Division at Otago in NZ's 2019 research-performance exercise.
