Fully-funded PhD opportunity in volcanology, igneous petrology, and
geochemistry at the University Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

Volatiles in melt inclusions from the volcanoes of Melanesia, southwest
Pacific Rim

A fully-funded PhD scholarship is available involving field volcanology,
igneous petrology, and geochemistry. This is through a collaboration
between Dr. Alex Nichols at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and
Dr. Ian Schipper at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Your responsibility will be to quantify the volatile flux from the sources
of volcanoes in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu by
analysing melt inclusions hosted in crystals within rocks collected on land
and underwater from these volcanoes. You will use a variety of in-situ
micro-analytical techniques, including electron probe microanalysis (EPMA),
laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS),
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Your
results will help quantify degassing and the volatile budget of the
volcanoes studied, as well as infer their source compositions, source
melting processes and conditions of melt extraction.

You will be a highly motivated candidate with a keen interest in volcanic
processes and geochemistry. Previous experience in the field and analytical
skills with a desire to learn new ones is required. Experience in any of
the aforementioned techniques, data handling, and geochemical modelling
would be desirable but is not essential. You must have completed a Masters
degree or BS/BSc degree with a significant research component at the time
of appointment.

You will be based in Christchurch, New Zealand, at the University of
Canterbury under the supervision of Nichols, within the active and diverse
volcanology research group there. You will also work closely with Schipper
at the Victoria University of Wellington and your work will be an integral
part of a project investigating gas emissions and volatile fluxes from the
same volcanoes led by Schipper (https://www.volcano-waka-lab.com/). As a
result, you will make several research visits to Wellington throughout the
duration of the project. The scholarship will cover the tuition fees of a
domestic or international student and offers a stipend of NZD 25,000 per
annum for three years. Please email alex.nichols@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you
require further information.

To apply email alex.nichols@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your CV and cover letter.
Candidates from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds are encouraged to
apply. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
