The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geosciences.


This newly established position will support an outstanding scholar interested in stimulating interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation among the Department’s faculty and students. The postdoctoral fellow will receive an annual stipend of $55,000 with a benefits package and $15,000 in discretionary research funds. The fellowship has an initial appointment period of 18 months with the possibility of extension to two years. The Department of Geosciences is part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and houses internationally recognized research programs spanning a broad spectrum of Earth Science disciplines, including earth surface dynamics, geodynamics, crustal evolution, petrology, volcanology and tectonics, paleobiology, hydrology, Earth system science, (paleo)climate, paleoceanography and cryospheric science, microbial geobiology and biogeochemistry, Earth and planetary system evolution, solid-earth and lowtemperature geochemistry, geomechanics and seismology (further information is available at: http://www.geosc.psu.edu).  The Department is closely tied to the Materials Research Institute, the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, the Energy Institute, the Astrobiology Research Center, the Institute for CyberScience, the Huck Life Sciences Institute, and the Institutes of Energy and the Environment at Penn State. 



Applicants must have a Ph.D. in geosciences or a related field awarded within three years of the time of appointment. Before applying, candidates should explore possible research topics with faculty in the Department of Geosciences, and develop a short (no longer than 5 pages including figures and references) proposal of research to be completed during the fellowship period. Preference will be given to candidates whose proposals involve collaboration among two or more departmental faculty members, particularly if this collaboration will establish new directions in their research.
