Session Title: V006. Crystal records of the time scales and thermal
evolution of plutonic, hydrothermal and volcanic systems
Section/Focus Group: Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology
Session ID#: 12704
Session Description:Crystal records of the time scales and thermal
evolution of plutonic, hydrothermal and volcanic systems
Magmatic systems are rarely in thermodynamic equilibrium. The dynamic
interplay of heat and mass transfer in magmatic systems drives chemical
disequilibrium on many scales, from a whole magma reservoir to individual
crystals. Tracking the chemical and thermal evolution of magmatic systems
can be done by unraveling the chemical zoning of crystals as they
frequently represent effective timekeepers of the processes as the system
evolves towards equilibrium. This session invites contributions utilizing
diffusion modeling particularly for natural samples from both continental
and oceanic settings to determine the duration and the rates of magmatic
processes as well as examine the thermal history of magmatic systems in
the supra- and sub-solidus.
