First textbook on Glaciovolcanism published

I am pleased to inform you that a new textbook, titled ‘Glaciovolcanism on Earth and Mars. Products, Processes and Palaeoenvironmental Significance’ is now published by Cambridge University Press and will be available from June 2016 (in Europe; from August 2016 in the US). The book, written by John Smellie and Ben Edwards, is 496 pages in length and contains 200 illustrations, a large glossary of glaciovolcanic terms and a comprehensive bibliography. It also comes with online access to six fully illustrated PowerPoint lectures designed for university lecturers to adopt or adapt for their graduate courses as they wish.

The study of volcano—ice interactions is a young field of volcanology experiencing very rapid growth and the book is designed to meet the demand for more information in a single well-referenced source. Supported by abundant diagrams and photos from the authors’ extensive collections, the book discusses the distinctive processes and characteristics of glaciovolcanic eruptions, and their products and landforms, with reference to both terrestrial and Mars occurrences. It also outlines where glaciovolcanic eruptions have occurred and will occur in future on Earth, the associated hazards of volcano—ice interactions, and how the resulting deposits are used to unravel planetary palaeoclimatic histories. The focus is practical, with particular emphasis on lithofacies, glaciovolcanic edifice construction and morphometry, and on applications to palaeoenvironmental studies, and the mathematics and physics of glaciovolcanic eruptions are also covered.

This book is the first global summary of past and current work on glaciovolcanism, and it identifies those areas in need of further research. It is therefore an ideal reference for academic researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of volcanology, glaciology, planetary science and palaeoenvironmental studies.
