Dear Colleagues,

As you may have heard, Don Swanson, of the U.S. Geological Survey, has been awarded the 2016 Distinguished Career Award from the Geological Society of America's Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division.  A topical session will be held in Don't honor at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America, September 25-28, 2016, in Denver, Colorado.

T228. Field Geology to Inform Volcanic Processes: A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson

The session will highlight the importance of painstaking field observations and analysis to understanding volcanic processes -- a hallmark of Don's career -- and we encourage abstract submissions along those lines.  Such work could be inspired by Don's example, build on his work in such places as the Columbia River Basalts, Cascade Arc, and Hawaii, or show how Don's interpretations have led to a better understanding of volcanic activity elsewhere in the world.

The abstract deadline is July 12.  Abstracts can be submitted directly to the session via the following link:

We look forward to an excellent session and celebration of Don's career at GSA in September!

See you in Denver,
Mike Poland (USGS)
Bruce Houghton (University of Hawaii)
