Postdoctoral research fellow position in Tephrostratigraphy at

the Earth Observatory of Singapore

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Tephrostratigraphy to participate in the reconstruction of the eruptive history of Sumatra (Indonesia). This will involve field work for site selection and collection of sediment cores from lakes and/or peatbogs, identification of tephra layers (including the cryptic ones) followed by their geochemical analysis, sample dating by radiocarbon or Ar/Ar methods. The successful candidate will work in a vibrant scientific department with a team of international scientists.

Young and research-intensive, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) is ranked 13th globally. It is also placed 1st amongst the world’s best young universities. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at NTU is a national science Research Centre of Excellence. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Field work: Work effectively with local collaborators and assist with site selection, field work planning and execution for the collection of sediment cores

Correlations of tephra with specific eruptions: Texturally and geochemically characterize the sampled volcanic ash. He or she will use statistical methods to correlate tephra layers between cores and with known eruptions

Log the collected sediment cores, and identify and sample tephra layers preserved within them

Expected to publish scientific outcomes of this research in high quality, peer-reviewed, international scientific journals.

He or she will be involved with PhD student mentoring

He or she will participate in the various volcanology-related education and outreach activities of the EOS

Requirements:

PhD degree in volcanology or equivalent

Prior experience in tephrostratigraphy

Experience in using geochemical laboratory facilities (including the XRF core scanner, scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, and laser-ablation ICP-MS)

Experience in conducting fieldwork for research

Self-driven, highly motivated, with interest to work with other researchers and scientists (team player) to produce high-quality research

Application:

Interested applicants are invited to submit a full CV, including academic qualifications, research records / work samples and names and contact details of two referees, to eos_humanresources@xxxxxxxxxx

Address any questions to Dr. Caroline Bouvet de Maisonneuve (carolinebouvet@xxxxxxxxxx).

We regret that only successful candidates will be informed.
