USGS Mendenhall Postdoc Opp.: Examining deep long-period earthquakes in California
*****************************************************************************************************
Mendenhall Opportunity 16-3: Mining 20+ years of continuous seismic data to characterize deep long-period earthquakes and associated volcanic systems in California
Deep, long-period (DLP) earthquakes, with characteristic frequencies of ~1-4 Hz, are thought to be generated by magma or other fluid movement in the mid-crust. As such, they convey critical information about the state of a volcanic system. DLP events are commonly associated with active volcanoes and have been identified beneath the majority of high- and very-high-threat volcanic centers in California, including Lassen, Clear Lake, Medicine Lake, Mono Craters, and Mammoth Mountain (Pitt et al., 2002). Despite their importance, DLPs (and their implications for volcanic hazards) remain poorly characterized and understood.
