Disaster-risk reduction, resilience, well-being and culture: A multidisciplinary workshop

Brief Information:

·         Event Start : Monday, 15 February 2016

·         Event Ends : Friday, 19 February 2016

·         Deadline for Application: Friday, 18 December 2015

The collaborative workshop between Coventry University, United Kingdom (UK) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Indonesia will be a critical, multidisciplinary effort to explore the research theme of natural hazards (e.g., volcanoes), disaster risk-reduction, community resilience and the role of cultural practices in recovery. We will bring together experts and early career researchers to address:

1.    Provision of the latest infrastructure to monitor accurately the activity and threat levels of volcanoes,

2.    Ways to evaluate and improve responses to and communication with vulnerable communities in relation to humanitarian disasters and emergencies,

3.    Current knowledge about and perspectives on operationalizing, understanding and investigating community resilience, well-being and disaster recovery.

Our workshop will fulfil these overarching aims in collaboration with Indonesian scientists, officials, NGOs, researchers and community members by focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on workshop presentations and discussions about how to:

1.    Improve the geographical monitoring of the activity and threat levels of natural disasters in Indonesia),

2.    Investigate risk communication practices as well as develop and evaluate culturally appropriate training to reduce disaster risks, and

3.    Examine how communities in Indonesia are prepared to respond to and recover in a resilient manner from volcano eruptions and other potential disasters in those regions (e.g., with psychological support).
