Dear Colleagues:
The 26th Goldschmidt Conference will be held in Yokohama, Japan, 26 June to 1 July 2016.
We invite you to submit session proposals to Theme 08 “Volcanoes and Hazards”. The scope of Theme08 is described below.
Session proposals can be submitted directly following the instructions at the following link:

Deadline 31 October 2015
You will be required to supply:
- a session title;
- a list of possible joint themes;
- names, affiliations and e-mail addresses of up to five conveners;
- brief session description (<250 words); and
- up to 5 key people who you would expect to present work in this session.
Please note that to date, we have solicited the following sessions:
1. Characteristics and processes of magma and mush reservoirs (Dr. Takeshi Kuritani, Hokkaido Univ.)
2. Linking magma ascent processes to volcanic phenomena, eruption dynamics and eruptive deposits (Dr. Atsushi Toramaru, Kyushu University)
3. Volcanic volatiles (e.g. Volcanic gases: from melt inclusions to remote sensing) (Dr. Hiroshi Shinohara, Geological Survey of Japan, AIST): jointly with Theme09 “Mineral Resources”
4. Integrating geochemistry, geophysical signals and modelling to understand characterize and mitigate volcanic hazards (Dr. Takeshi Oba, Tokai University)
We particularly welcome session proposals to fill potential gaps in the theme or focus more closely on areas of particular current importance. We anticipate a total of 6 to 7 sessions, i.e. are looking for at least 2 to 3 additional proposals.

Theme08 [Volcanoes and Hazards]

Volcanoes and volcanism reveal fundamental insights into sources and processes within our planet, as well as their geochemical signatures. Igneous processes have controlled the long-term evolution of our and other planets. In addition, volcanoes represent serious and ever-present natural hazards, and better understanding their inner workings is critical to inform hazard mitigation efforts aimed at protecting lives and livelihoods. New analytical techniques, monitoring technologies (including remote sensing from ground and satellite platforms) and geochemical as well as geophysical modelling now allow us to gain novel perspectives on melt sources, magma chamber and conduit processes, and on the dynamics and environmental impacts of volcanic eruptions. These perspectives have the potential to radically advance the characterization of volcanic hazards, to improve public preparedness, and to inform strategies to constructively present and communicate the data to broader stakeholders. This theme seeks to investigate the full range of magmatic and volcanic processes necessary to piece together the complex behavior, hazards, and impacts of volcanoes and their many fascinating phenomena.
