The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University
invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in
rock mechanics. The project, a collaboration with University of
California, Davis, focuses on fundamental physics and chemistry of
reaction-driven cracking, in which volume changes due to fluid-rock
reaction create stresses leading to fracture formation. Triaxial
experiments will be conducted on peridotite samples from the Oman
Drilling Project, as well as analog materials, to map the confining
pressure, differential stress and temperature ranges in which
reaction-driven cracking occurs. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist
will be expected to conduct experiments and work with modelers in
interpreting results.
Requirements:
A
Ph.D. in rock mechanics, experimental petrology or a related discipline
is required. Experience in triaxial testing or other rock mechanics
experimentation is preferred.
Appointment will be for 1-year, with continuation pending funding and progress.
Priority will be given to applications received by September 21, 2015. Search will continue until the position is filled.
