A new book on 'Global Volcanic Hazards and Risk' is now available at www.cambridge.org/volcano, either as a hardback or free ebook (click 'Open Access').

The book developed from a series of report that were commissioned by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and includes contributions from more than 130 scientists from 86 institutions in nearly 50 countries.

This is the first comprehensive assessment of global volcanic hazards and risk, presenting the state of the art in our understanding of global volcanic activity. It examines our assessment and management capabilities, and considers the preparedness of the global scientific community and government agencies to manage volcanic hazards and risk. Particular attention is paid to volcanic ash, the most frequent and wide-ranging volcanic hazard.

Volcanic hazard profiles are also available for every country in the world that has active volcanoes, providing detail on the numbers, distribution, style and history of volcanoes in each country, as well as identifying how many people, roads, airports and ports are threatened by volcanic activity.

Of interest to government officials, the private sector, students and researchers, this book is a key resource for the disaster risk reduction community and for those interested in volcanology and natural hazards. A non-technical summary report is included for policy makers and general interest readers.

The book and the UN report could not have been put together without immense community effort and collaboration and we'd like to sincerely thank all of those who contributed their time and expertise, thank-you!
