Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Passive
Seismic Exploration
Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Postdoktor SKO 1017) is available at Department of Geosciences, Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED)
The fellowship is for a period of 2 years.
Passive seismic exploration of the East Java Basin, Indonesia.
The spectacular Lusi eruption started in NE Java, Indonesia on the 29th of May 2006 after a M6.3 earthquake struck near Yogyakarta, about 250 km away. Initially, several gas and mud eruption sites appeared along the reactivated strike-slip Watukosek fault system and within weeks several villages were submerged by boiling mud. The most prominent eruption site was named Lusi. Lusi is possibly the youngest sedimentary-hosted hydrothermal system on Earth and is located a few kilometers to the NE of the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex. To date Lusi is still active and erupts gas, water, mud and rock fragments. Gas and water data show that the plumbing system of Lusi is connected with the neighboring Arjuna-Welirang volcanic complex.
In order to understand how frequent seismicity affects the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex, the Watukosek fault system, and the ongoing Lusi eruption site, we deployed 30 seismic stations (short-period and broadband) in the East Java basin. This will shed light on the ongoing seismic activity beneath the Arjuno-Weliran-Lusi complex. The network is currently operating and will acquire data for at least one year.
The main goal of the candidate will be to exploit this dataset to provide more information about the subsurface structure of this region. Ideally, he/she will:
• Use the acquired seismic data to perform an ambient noise tomography
• Highlight the occurrence of the Watukosek Fault system by identifying temporal variations of seismic velocity and/or waveform coherence to reveal preferential fluid migration paths in the subsurface ?
Combine seismic studies with other available geophysical data (i.e. resistivity and magnetotelluric measurements) to better constraint the subsurface structure of the Arjuno-Welirang-Lusi complex.
Qualifications
We invite applications from geophysicists and seismologists in the field of passive seismic experiments who are interested in the understanding of geothermal environments and large-scale geological systems. We particularly encourage researchers working on ambient noise correlations and joint inversion of geophysical data but broader profiles will also be considered.
The Postdoctoral candidate will be based at the CEED of Oslo and will be involved in a close cooperation with several international institutes: Adriano Mazzini (CEED, Oslo), Matteo Lupi (University of Geneva), Anne Obermann, (ETH Zurich), and researchers at BMKG Indonesia. For more information please contact: adriano.mazzini@xxxxxxxxxx or matteo.lupi@xxxxxxxxxxxx or anne.obermann@xxxxxxxxxxx.
Requirements
• Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in, Geophysics, Physics, Geosciences, Informatics or Mathematics.
• The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.
• Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for postdoctoral fellowship positions.
• A good comand of English is required.
Salary
Position code 1352 (Postdoc), Pay Grade: 57-65 (from 482 800 to 559 600 NOK/year, depending on qualifications and seniority)
