Announcement of new SCAR Expert group on Antarctic Volcanism (ANTVOLC) and associated kickstart workshop
From: Massimo Pompilio <massimo.pompilio@xxxxxxx>
*****************************************************************************************************

We wish to inform the volcanological community that the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) has approved the formation of an Expert Group on Antarctic Volcanism (ANTVOLC). See http://www.scar.org/ssg/geosciences/volcanism

The group aims to

·            promote the study of Antarctic volcanism and disperse information;

·            discuss protocols, methodologies and best practices;

·            integrate & share geological information;

·            facilitate regional correlations (e.g. tephrochronology);

·            compile, integrate & publish databases (e.g. outcrop maps, geochemistry);

·            to identify priorities, critical issues and future scientific directions;

·            to develop collaborations and international joint research projects;

·            to exchange data and ideas with other SCAR Scientific Programs or Expert Groups (e.g. SERCE, PAIS see: http://www.scar.org/srp);

·            to provide a clear route map for obtaining expert advice during any volcanic crises in Antarctica ( e.g. Deception Island, Mt Erebus, Mt Melbourne, South Sandwich Islands or subglacial eruptions); and

·            to develop productive links with related science disciplines (e.g. glaciology,
biology, climate/ice sheet (and other) modelling)

These activities will be developed over a 4 year period and shall include workshops and scientific sessions mainly attached to international conferences (e.g. AGU, EGU, ISAES, IAVCEI).

A kickstart workshop will be held at the INGV Osservatorio Etneo in Catania (http://www.ct.ingv.it/) from 3 to 5 July 2015 after the upcoming IUGG General Assembly in Prague. The workshop will be divided into a general session including solicited talks, plenary discussions aimed to review and discuss the state of the art of Antarctic Volcanism research and a poster session.

It is also expected that this discussions at this workshop will lead to the development of an organizational structure (e.g. establish initial group membership, a steering committee, and regional or national coordinators) and agree common activities. During the workshop a visit to the monitoring system of Sicilian volcanoes at INGV will be arranged together with a one-day field trip to Etna volcano.

The scientific program, information on accommodation, and links to a dedicated website will be available soon.

To participate and join our email list, please send an message indicating your interest to Massimo Pompilio (Massimo.Pompilio@xxxxxxx) and John Smellie (jls55@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) before 31 May 2015.

Looking forward to see you in Catania

Massimo Pompilio and John Smellie
