Graduate students and postdocs: FEMA sponsored volcanic hazards short course at GSA:

The GSA short course 506 Volcanic Crisis Awareness, runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday October 25 and 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday October 26 immediately before the GSA annual meeting Denver, Colorado.  This day-and-a-half awareness-level course will provide participants with an understanding of the complex factors that influence volcanic crises: the hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts, and risks and the tools and processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warnings, preparedness, mitigation, and response.  It provides an understanding of the processes, impacts, and causes of volcanic hazards; current monitoring and hazard assessment tools and products; volcano warning and dissemination systems and methods; and, community response to eruptions and volcanic crises. It was developed jointly by the University of Hawaii and the Volcanic Hazards program of USGS.

The course includes 5 modules entitled:

The volcano problem

Hazards and impacts

The pulse of the volcano

Case studies

Awareness and preparedness

These are then followed by a 4-hour long eruption scenario based on a future eruption at Mount Hood.

FEMA covers all administrative costs for this course and issues a formal certificate to participants who complete the course.
