Dear Colleagues,

We encourage you to submit an abstract to the AGU Session DI013: State of the Asthenosphere at the AGU Fall Meeting December 9-13, 2013 in San Francisco CA.  Please note that the session is listed in the Study of Earth's Deep Interior (DI).

The asthenosphere is the mechanically weak layer directly below the lithosphere that is characterized by low seismic wave velocities and high electrical conductivity, as well as being the source region for mid-ocean ridge basalts. This session will explore our state-of-the-art understanding of the physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the asthenosphere and their heterogeneity, including the presence/absence of asthenospheric melts and volatiles. The session aims to bring together observations from geophysics, geodynamics, mineral and rock physics, and petrology to form a multidisciplinary view of the asthenosphere. We encourage interdisciplinary submissions, as well as those investigating a wide variety of tectonic settings.

Invited Speakers:
Elizabeth Cottrell, Smithsonian
Caroline Beghein, UCLA
Samer Naif, UCSD
Tolulope Olugboji, Yale

Conveners:
Nicholas Schmerr, NASA
Shun-ichiro Karato, Yale
Christy Till, USGS

We look forward to your submissions,
Christy, Nick and Shun
