Dear colleagues,

The AGU Fall Meeting, in San Francisco, will be held December 9-13.

We would like to invite you to consider submitting an abstract to:

V043. Unconventional Observing Approaches: Assessing Volcanoes and the Environment

[AGU session link]

Confirmed invited speakers:

Fred Prata (NILO)

Christoph Kern (USGS-CVO)

Jorge Andres Diaz (Costa Rica)

Abstract:

New miniaturized technologies now permit environmental measurements at unprecedented resolutions, frequencies, distribution, and costs. The capability of low-cost ground-based and airborne platforms to provide both monitoring validation data and Cal/Val of orbital data (e.g., for gas sensing satellite platforms such as OMI/Aura and GOSAT/IBUKI), are strongly impacting gas and aerosol sensing and sampling of environmental measurements like volcanic and other point emissions sources. Small Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (sUAVs, ≤250kg) can flexibly make measurements beyond the reach of manned aircraft and bridge the wide gap between high spatial spatial resolution remote sensing and high temporal resolution in-situ monitoring instruments and platforms (e.g., mini-DOAS, tether balloons/kites), at low cost.

We welcome presentations on science/operations experience and results using such unconventional new technologies, especially, but not limited to, the area of volcanic degassing, its hazards, and environmental impacts.

The abstract submission deadline is August 6.

Please submit via the Fall Meeting website, https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2013/

Conveners:

Florian M. Schwandner (NASA-JPL)

Dave Pieri (NASA-JPL)
