Postdoc in experimental petrology - Clermont-Ferrand, France
From: "Etienne Medard" <E.Medard@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Dear all,

- sorry for multiple postings -

We are currently looking for a postdoctoral research associate to work on
the origin of intraplate alkaline magmatism. The main goal is to
understand the role of volatiles and the conditions of melting.

The project involves two main parts : (1) determination of the composition
of low-degree, volatile-bearing melts in the garnet stability field, using
a variety of melt extraction tools developed in our laboratory, and (2)
determination of the volatile contents in melt inclusions from a variety
of primitive alkaline lavas.

Candidates must have completed a PhD in experimental petrology or a
related field. Prior experience with high-temperature solid-liquid phase
equilibria (piston-cylinder, IHPV, EHPV, multi-anvil, furnaces) is highly
desirable. This project is funded through Labex Clervolc (ANR/Feder) for
two years, starting in the Fall of 2013.

Interested candidates should submit a CV (including publication list),
statement of research interests and the names and contact details for at
least two references to Etienne Médard (E.Medard@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
For more informations, please feel free to send an email to the same
address. Deadline for applications is July 7th.

Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans is located in Clermont-Ferrand, in the hilly
central part of France, and next to some of the most recent European
volcanoes. This is an excellent area for outdoor activities, with a low
cost of living. The laboratory is mainly dedicated to the understanding of
magmatic processes, from the structure of the deep mantle to surface
volcanic activity. The experimental petrology team comprises about 15
tenured researchers, and hosts a complete range of experimental devices
(one-atmosphere furnaces, EHPV, IHPV, piston-cylinders, multi-anvils,
diamond-anvil cells) as well as a variety of analytical facilities
(electron microprobe, SEM, LA-ICP-MS, FTIR, Raman). The department offers
strong graduate programs in volcanology and in geological engineering.
