Dear All,
We wish to draw your attention to the next Italian Forum of Earth Sciences “Geoitalia 2013” Session A4 – Men and volcanoes, convened by Sandro de Vita, Mauro A. Di Vito and Costanza Bonadonna. The assembly will be held in Pisa (Italy) from 16 to 18 September 2013. Information about submitting an abstract to this session (deadline 15 June 2013) can be found on the Forum website http://www.geoitalia2013.it.
Session details
Title: Men and Volcanoes
Conveners:Sandro de Vita, Mauro A. Di Vito, Costanza Bonadonna
Description:
Since the origin of mankind volcanism and human life have been strictly linked to each other. Despite the hazards posed by volcanoes, humans have always found good reasons for settlement and development around them because of high soil fertility or for the presence of ore deposits and volcanic rocks that are good building materials. Italy is one of the most impressive examples of this interaction, which led, to the evolution of a civilization that nowadays has to face a growing exposition to volcanic risk, caused by an uncurbed urban drift. Moreover, the modern society is more vulnerable than previously, also to low-magnitude eruptions, due to the development of a complex communication and trade network at a global scale, as demonstrated by the recent Eyjafjallajökull eruption.
The main goal of this session is to promote cultural exchange and interaction among diverse disciplines, so as to enhance our knowledge of the relationships among volcanism, environment and human communities. Multidisciplinary contributions are solicited mainly in the fields of geological evolution of volcanoes, impact of eruption on climate and environment, “volcarchaeology”, interaction between emplacement of volcanic products and human settlements, volcanic hazards assessment, risk mitigation.
