Five years ago, on 2 May 2008, a large (VEI 4-5) eruption began unexpectedly at Chaitén Volcano in Chile. High- silica rhyolite magma was erupted during both the explosive and the subsequent dome-building stages of the eruption. The ~2-week-long explosive phase of the eruption generated widespread tephra fall and small, proximal pyroclastic flows including a small-volume directional blast. The subsequent 18-20-month effusive phase erupted 0.8 km3 of rhyolite lava in a complex, intracaldera lava dome. The eruption, and subsequent hydrological processes, caused severe damage to local and distal communities. Because this was the first major rhyolitic eruption since that of Alaska’s Katmai-Novarupta in 1912, a number of scientists were interested in the studying the impacts of and responses to this eruption. A collection of articles is now published in a special issue of the journal Andean Geology. Those interested in this volcanic episode and related topics can take advantage of the open access at www.andeangeology.cl forthcoming articles.
