Volcano Database Info from Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program

The recent question from Stefano Carlino looking for a database of worldwide volcanic activity was very timely, and we are always glad for the opportunity to better inform the volcanological community about what the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) does.

GVP is a part of the Department of Mineral Sciences at the Smithsonian Institution. Since 1968 we have been reporting on recent volcanism through many different and changing media. Most of you will be familiar with the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network and the Smithsonian / US Geological Survey Weekly Volcanic Activity Report. We also maintain a database of Holocene eruptions and general information about all volcanoes active during that time, data which drives the GVP website (volcano.si.edu) and has been published in multiple editions of “Volcanoes of the World.”

Over the past two years the database has been undergoing a major software change, significant schema restructuring, and an overall audit. Unfortunately this also means that the currently posted data is 2 years out of date. That will soon be rectified. During that same period, a new website has been under construction, which will include, for the first time, a complex search interface which will allow users to extract customized results. Look for an announcement and a new website soon.

Best regards,

Ed Venzke
