Dear All,

A final reminder of the following session to be held at the IAVCEI General Assembly in Kagoshima, Japan (20-24 July 2013):

4-6. Responding to volcanic health hazards
Suminori Akiba, Peter Baxter, Satoko Iwasawa, Eiji Yano, Yasuhiro Ishimine

The health hazards of volcanic eruptions range from first order hazards such as injury and death from pyroclastic density currents, to second order hazards such as respiratory conditions from inhalation of volcanic emissions (ash and gas), psychological trauma, and the effects of leachable elements on water supplies. Passive degassing and radon release in quiescent periods may also pose health risks to local populations. Over the past decade we have had unprecedented opportunities to expand our understanding of volcanic health hazards, with the continuing eruptions of Sakurajima volcano, Japan, the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, and Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. There have also been significant opportunities for research following the eruptions of Chaitén and Puyehue, Chile, and Eyjafjallajökull and Grimsvötn, Iceland and Miyakejima, Japan.

We invite submission of abstracts on any area of volcanic health hazard research but, in particular, we welcome research which gives insight into how we may start to risk assess exposure of populations to volcanic ash and gas. We also welcome contributions from those in other disciplines, such as petrology and geochemistry, whose expertise in volcanic processes (such as plume modelling, mineralization and degassing) may have application to population exposure assessment.

The abstract and grant application deadline is 31 January. Please see http://www.iavcei2013.com/ for further details.

We look forward to seeing you in Kagoshima!

Best wishes,

Claire Horwell
