Dear Colleagues

We would like to encourage abstracts to be submitted to Session 1-3a on the Cycle of volatiles at subduction zones, at the IAVCEI 2013 General Assembly held in Kagoshima, Japan, July 20-24.
Abstract deadline: 31st January 2013.
Abstracts can be submitted at: http://www.iavcei2013.com/abstract_submission/abstract_submission.html

Session details:
Genesis and nature of arc magmas and geofluids are fundamental for understanding a wide range of modern and ancient geological phenomena, including earthquakes, subduction mechanics, global material circulation, volcanism and volcanic degassing, metamorphism, orogeny and continental growth. More specifically, fluid pressure to reduce rock strength, seismic structures of the mantle and crust, plate boundary lubrication by serpentinite, slab fluid signatures, magma generation and differentiation, magmatic volatile content (e.g., H2O, CO2, Li, B, F, Cl, S) and volatile degassing, hydrothermal activities with or without ore formation, and eclogite and high-P metamorphism are all expressions of subduction zone processes. To discuss links among these processes, this session invites papers employing a range of methods, including geophysics (e.g., seismic and magnetotelluric studies), petrology and geochemistry (including but not limited to bulk compositions, melt and fluid inclusion analysis, mineral hygrometry, measurement of water in nominally anhydrous minerals, direct measurements of volatiles in gases emitted by active arc volcanoes).

Invited speakers:
Ikuku Wada (Virginia Tech, USA)
Terry Plank (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, USA)

Conveners:
Georg F. Zellmer (Academica Sinica, Taiwan)
Morihisa Hamada (TITEC, Japan)
Jun-ichi Nakajima (Tohoku University, Japan)
Dapeng Zhao (Tohoku University, Japan)
Jun-ichi Kimura (IFREE, JAMSTEC)
Alexander Nichols (IFREE, JAMSTEC)
Hikaru Iwamori (TITEC, Japan)
