Dear Colleagues,
The American Museum of Natural History is once again accepting applications for our Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science (grades 7-12) degree program. The AMNH MAT is a unique, residency-based teacher education program that is designed to turn great Earth and space science majors into extraordinary Earth science teachers. To that end, I am asking you to pass on information about this program to any of your students who may be interested in exploring the idea of classroom teaching. Interested prospective students can apply online at http://www.amnh.org/mat.
The program employs rigorous academic classes in scientific content and pedagogy, intensive mentoring, and extensive use of technology to provide degree candidates with a deep understanding of scientific content and of the importance of an inquiry-based approach to learning that demonstrates the relevance of science to students' lives. Doctoral-level Museum scientists, curators, and educators teach all coursework. Teacher candidates also work side-by-side with mentor teachers in NYC-area middle and high schools, putting theory into practice in classroom settings throughout an entire school year.
Students accepted into the AMNH MAT program will receive a full scholarship for tuition as well as a $30,000 stipend over the 15 months of the program. In exchange, they must commit to seek employment to teach in a high-need school in New York State for a minimum of 4 years following graduation.
We are holding a series of Open Houses to share more about the program, answer questions, and give tours AMNH’s rich Earth and Planetary Science halls and digital resources.
Upcoming Open House Dates:
January 6, 2013 12 – 4 pm at the Museum in New York City
January 16, 2013 6 – 7:30 pm (EST) online webinar
Please share this information with Senior undergraduates or recent undergraduate or graduate students who majored in Earth Science or related fields at your institution. I encourage you and your students to explore the program website at: http://www.amnh.org/mat
Please feel free to reach out for more information by contacting the MAT office directly:
