November 18-28, 2013 (Salta, Argentina)

This will be a  SPECIAL year  as we are celebrating the 20th  anniversary of this Volcanological course , one of the oldest in Latin America.  This course is organized annually by Universidad Nacional de Salta , Instituto GEONORTE and CONICET. Over 500 students have participated in this course over the last 20 years. This year will begin with 1 day of scientific presentations of different volcanological topics by specially invited international volcanologists. The main purpose is to  show and undertake field practices in different volcanic structures  (Ring tuff, collapsed calderas, strato-volcanoes, monogenetic volcanoes, shield volcanoes, domes, etc) in order to recognized its deposits and reconstruct the volcanic history of region. The course also takes to explain how volcanoes work and the risk and benefits associated to them. The course will be held at two different geodynamic scenarios: The Salta distensive Cretaceous rift along the Quebrada de  las Conchas and Cafayate and the  San Antonio  de los Cobres Volcanic Zone related to the Andean orogenesis (Salta,  NW Argentina). This  offers the possibility of combining theoretical sessions with many field practices . The course will offer a review of the latest developments in the understanding of volcanic eruptions dynamics, the relationships between volcanism and the genesis of mineral deposits, as well as their effects and hazard assessment. The course provides credits to PhD students and it is specially aimed at the Spanish-speaking community, PhD Students, professionals and technicians working on different aspects of the volcanism.
